From 30 April through 1 July 2024, the exhibiton 'Timelines (2018-2023)' by Thom van Hoek will be on show in Museum Het Schip's lunchroom.
In his practice, Thom van Hoek strives to visualise the passing of time and its impact on how we interpret our surroundings; how meaning can change through erosion, mediation and repetition. It deals with the dialectics between artificiality and nature and the temporality of the time we find ourselves in – in regards to the housing situation as well as climate change. His work manifests itself primarily through organic sculpture, often using processed algae, but also photography and occasionally video and sound. After studying at University of Utrecht and the Fine Arts Department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Van Hoek graduated from the master's program Materialisation in Art & Design at the Sandberg Instituut in 2017. He currently works at Broedplaats HW10 in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. The photos of 'Timelines' have been made during artist-in-residence programs in Porto (2018) and Napoli (2022) and stays in Maputo (2019) and Palermo (2023).
'Timelines' is a series of digital photographs stemming from a specific way of looking at the urban environment. In the Anthropocene we are always surrounded by our own past, which naturally influences the present. These remnants often contain historical ideas, cultural heritage from generations or maybe even civilizations before us. You can see it as a sort of geology of society. With his camera, Thom van Hoek tries to loosely portray these different layers in a single image, to not forget how the time passes and things change – some too slowly, others too swiftly.
